Welcome to the Paso Robles Public Schools Independent Study Center. This handbook will acquaint you with our policies and procedures. We have included different aspects of our Center to give you, the parent, a better understanding of the extraordinary services provided. Our Resource Teachers will be available to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to our partnership with you in creating a very successful educational experience for your child.

Home School Philosophy Since 1990, Paso Robles Public Schools has offered the Independent Study/Home School Program for families of pupils grades K-8 who have chosen to educate their children at home. The growing number of these families and their requests for educational guidance, assistance and support prompted the development of this home-centered instruction. Moreover, in 2000, our Board of Trustees showed their excellent support for our Program by voting to establish it as a separate individual School. This gives us the ability to graduate 8th grade students with a formal ceremony.

Independent Study is a privilege and a weighty responsibility, and is not for every child or family. It is an alternative to classroom instruction for those families who have the time, ability, desire and need. The parent assumes responsibility for executing the appropriate grade-level curriculum for the student which has been prepared by the home school teacher. Daily instruction is furnished by the parent with general resources, methods, coordination, and supervision offered by the Resource Teacher. The District provides grade-level expectancies for language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies in the form of the district adopted curriculum guides based on the state framework for each subject.

Our Resource Teachers strive to support the growth of the whole person in each of the following development areas: social, physical, creative, and intellectual.

The philosophy and goals of home-center learning are based on the belief that every student is a unique human being deserving of the best personalized education possible. CHILDREN ARE OUR GREATEST NATURAL RESOURCES
